Say what?!?! Yes that’s right – a hanging chandelier cake! We couldn’t believe it either when we first heard from Caitlin, the talented baker who runs A Little Cake Place in Brisbane. She recently created what we believe to be Australia’s first hanging chandelier cake and we are so excited to share some pictures of this incredible feat with you all. We just know that this will be an upcoming trend to look out for!!
After winning an incredible wedding industry competition, Kirsty & Sam came to A Little Cake Place with the idea of a hanging chandelier cake of which she had a few separate images that had been created in the USA including Kaley Cuoco from the Big Bang Theory’s wedding cake. This seems to be the first time it has been achieved in Australia.
A Little Cake Place and Beedazzled Events teamed up to work hard to make Kirsty’s dream wedding cake – a hanging chandelier cake from the ceiling.
A Little Cake Place sourced a unique cake stand that was suitable and strong enough to support a 3 tier real 12kg cake upside down while handing. The decorations were designed to make the cake look like a chandelier hanging from the ceiling. The whole cake was edible (not the crystals – these were plastic) and the bride and groom was able cut the cake while it was hanging.
Sunshine Coast based Beedazzled Events stylists Bianca Frankling and Asha Bea created the strong yet subtle support system and in the evening the cake looks like it is suspended in mid-air.
After the support systems were ready, we had a trial run of the cake which ran extremely smoothly! It was perfect the first time. We only had to amend the length of the crystals as they were a bit short when viewing the cake from below.
On the day it took 2 people 2.5hours to set up from start to finish. Each tier of cake was already covered and were set up on the stand on location. The cake was then hung once supported by the stand and the crystals were then attached to the cake while it was hanging. The lace was then placed over the crystals to hide the join. The lace was wet lustered to create a nice shine, and a string of pearls was placed above the lace as a finishing touch.
The cake was a huge feature – Guests were be able to view the cake from below and above as it was located in the middle of the main winding stairwell at Maleny Manor.
The flavour of the cake is White Russian (as per the cocktail) – a White Chocolate Mud Cake with a hint of Kahlua. The inspiration for this flavour came from the movie ‘The Big Lebowski’. After watching the movie, owner of A Little Cake Place Caitlin Mitchell, was craving a White Russian cocktail and came up with the idea to transform it into a cake flavour.
