Can you tell us a bit about Unicorn Studios?
Unicorn Studios is a boutique photography service specialising in weddings. Melanie Russell is an award winning photojournalist who embraced wedding photography after a decade as an editorial photographer for magazines and newspapers.
Do you travel for weddings?
The studio based in the Illawarra, NSW. Yes, I will travel just about anywhere, for a little extra, just ask for a quote.
How would you describe your style?
Being a photojournalist, my style is documentary focused, I like to tell the story as it unfolds. There are a few set up shots which need to be taken, but apart from that, most of the images I take will be candid and you won’t even notice I’m there! When it comes to taking portraits of the wedding party and the bride and groom, I like to take ‘action shots’, so it looks natural and you don’t feel awkward. This is a skill I learnt after many years of being a photojournalist, photos should never look staged. Also, when I photograph a wedding, I am totally prepared, I have a plan, (including a back-up plan if it rains), I will let you know what my ideas are in advance and I guarantee that I will capture beautiful pictures on your day. Preparation is crucial.
Why do you think photography is such an important part of a couple’s big day?
Apart from your memories, photos are the only keepsake you take away, photography that captures your event beautifully is very important, as is an album which does justice to the images.
What advice do you have for couples when they are thinking about their wedding photography?
Find an experienced photographers style you like, then meet them in person and look at the quality of their Albums. Make sure you choose a package that includes an album, an album is an absolute must. My wedding packages include a fine-art, lay flat album of the highest quality available and hand made here in Australia. I will create a package without an album, but I make sure you receive a lovely high quality print or two.
What do you love most about being a wedding photographer?
I love photographing people in love basically, and I love creating and capturing beautiful pictures. It’s also exciting when I present my clients with their first sneak peek blog and their reaction to it, my clients are amazed at how I have managed to create so many different images in usually a very short period of time. I love the album design process which is so easy and it’s all online. Finally I also love weddings, so for me there is no better job
Do you have a favourite wedding photograph? What is the story behind it?
Yes, my favourite image so far is of Eliza and John taken at Cathedral Rocks, a distinctive rock formation, in Kiama on the NSW South Coast, a photographer’s delight! Apart from the amazing location, Eliza and John’s wedding was very emotional. Eliza suffered from a rare neurological disorder that forced her head to rest painfully on her shoulder, while the debilitating condition has since righted itself, a number of physical impediments remain, despite this she has just finished her PHD. Everyone attending the wedding absolutely adored Eliza, especially John, I cried a few tears behind the camera as I quickly realised what a privilege it was to witness such a beautiful couple marry.
What can couples expect when they visit your stand?
Expect to sit down with me and tell me every detail about your wedding as I will be as excited as you. Along with looking through some lovely albums as I talk you through my packages. We can also discuss and design a package that suits your wedding requirements.
Are you running any specials on the day?
Yes! I am offering a 10% discount on any wedding photography package, including one we make up together, that’s if you book and pay the 10% package deposit on the day.
