What a super fun day Jadey & Tim’s cute retro inspired wedding was!! I have just fallen in love with so many of their gorgeous little touches from their special day and I’m loving having the opportunity to share them with you all.
So lets step back a little first and set the scene – Jade & Tim share an absolute love of music with both of them holding PhDs in the field. Tim’s in music psychology and Jadey’s in pop musicology on the music of the Beach Boys. They are both university lecturers as well as musicians. Tim is also a freelance journalist who writes about music and reviewing records.
Jadey & Tim’s love story started when they met in 2003 through an old blogging site called LiveJournal. Jadey posted an essay about Radiohead she had written as an undergrad and Tim replied to it, rebutting some of her arguments! From there they realised that we would be great friends. Having been together since 2004, Tim proposed on their 10-year anniversary, underneath a huge tree by the Cook’s river in Marrickville, a spot where they often used to picnic together.
“We wanted the styling to reflect the two of us, and also include our friends. So many of our friends helped to make all the pom pom decorations, the tassels, the centrepieces – there were many “crafternoons”. A lot of the decorations had gold stars everywhere – garlands, centrepieces, in the bridesmaids hair – these were inspired by a line in one of our favourite songs “God Only Knows” (by the Beach Boys) – “I may not always love you, but as long as there are stars above you, you’ll never need to doubt it”. A garland of stars hung over us at the ceremony, it was subtle but meaningful. A dear friend made our invitations for us, Tim’s aunt made our beautiful bouquets – the help and love from our friends was really the most important part of our styling.”
“We tried to find vendors in our local area, and as a result, almost everything to do with the wedding came from the Inner West in Sydney. We love the area so much, we wanted it to play a part in our day. We tried to include lots of little elements of the two of us throughout the day. Tim loves ice cream, so we hired an ice cream truck to serve treats after the ceremony.”
“Tim’s amazing blue velvet jacket was found for $15 at a Salvos in the Blue Mountains after a whole day of wandering around op shops and antiques stores. It was perfect for him on our wedding day, we couldn’t believe our luck!”
“I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted for my dress, so I hired a local dressmaker to make it up for me. I wanted a knee-length dress, a twirly skirt, sleeves and polka-dots! Keeping with the retro theme, I wore a short veil for the ceremony (and changed it to a headband of gold glitter stars that I made for the reception). My petticoat was mint-coloured and I embroidered my Mum’s signature into the waistband so she could be with me somehow on the day. My very sparkly shoes were adorable, and a left a trail of sparkles wherever I went that day! My bridesmaid’s dresses were from Fabled and True and were made from vintage fabrics. The pink and mint coloured flowers matched the day perfectly.”
“As a way to honour Jadey’s Mum, Wendy, who passed away before we were married, Jadey and her bridesmaid Amanda (and Amanda’s Mum!) handmade special gold sparkle brooches in the shape of a heart. These were given to all of our guests at the ceremony so that a little piece of Wendy was with all of our guests during the day. Everyone seemed to really like them a lot.”
Tim’s Aunt put together the beautiful bouquets for the girls, she even sprayed the leaves with gold glitter so they would sparkle in the sun.
“We hung a big icecream-shaped piñata in a tree near the ceremony, not realising until later that it was hung next to a large bees nest! Luckily we didn’t get overwhelmed with swarming bees after we busted open the piñata, but it was close!”
Jadey and her friends all worked for months making hundreds of pom poms of different sizes – there were many ‘crafternoons’ to finish them all! All of these were made into the centrepieces and decorations for the ceremony. All of the decorations for the reception were handmade too, from the table cloths and tassels, to the banners and signage.
For little favours, guests could take home some of Jadey’s favourite tea, or some of Tim’s favourite hot chocolate with mini marshmallows.
“A friend made us some amazing gig posters to put up at the venue, which had little portraits of all the performing musicians – we got everyone to sign the poster at the end of the night, and it’s one of my favourite things we kept from the day.”
“One of the most special parts of the day was the music at the reception. We are both musicians and we put together a “revue” (which we called the “Inner West Galaxy of Stars Revue”) where all of our musical friends played our favourite love songs. We also played a few too! We are terrible at dancing, so we opted to have a “first song” instead and played “You’re So Good to Me” by the Beach Boys together.”
