Jacinta & Jack’s Shotgun-Chic Vintage Wedding

The decision to have a big wedding didn’t come lightly for Jacinta and Jack. With the sudden amd devastating loss of their best friend days after getting engaged and the knowledge of an impending move overseas, a quick elopement at the registry was on the cards. But it was actually their newly widowed maid of honour that convinced us the couple ‘if its worth doing, its worth doing well’. With her blessing Jacinta & Jack planned the whole wedding in only 6 weeks. “A ridiculous task but to our surprise things fell into place with great ease. We called it our ‘shot-gun chic wedding’ *sans baby,” recalls Jacinta.

“I found my dress while op-shopping in Newtown, at the time we were still going to the registry office and I was just looking for a pretty frock, the 50’s original was a lucky find.”

“We had both ceremony and reception at The Mint, Sydney. It is part of the Historic Houses Trust. After visiting it previously on architecture studies tour I knew then and there that it was the perfect place for us. Full of beautiful old sandstone, convict bricks, texture, layers, a beautiful example of adaptive reuse and conservation.”

“Jack and I both agree that selecting a celebrant first is key, there are plenty of beautiful venues, but few people who can transform a couple of vows into something special and personal. We were lucky enough to work with Robyn Pattison, she is amazing and we still get complements about our unique ceremony. Second to finding a celebrant is a photographer that you can work with and trust their style. We worked with Thomas Stewart, he was perfect at catching every moment, without ever being seen. We made the memories, but he collected them for us in a beautiful way.”

As a designer, Jacinta had more of a design philosophy rather them theme or colour scheme. They considered the location; a historic site, our bridal party; as much a part of our story as the couple were and their own ethos and sensibilities. “Keeping our footprint to a minimum, sourcing things locally and reusing objects without it looking like a hippy explosion.”

“I visited Reverse Garbage in Marrickville for all our table centre needs. With an open mind you can see value in anything. Our flowers were all natives and in season, our rings were hand made by a local jeweller and my engagement ring was second hand.”

Jacinta’s advice for brides-to-be:

“If I had any advice it would be to remember this isn’t a Hollywood movie, its real life. Expect at least one thing to go wrong. It rained on our day,  but instead of getting upset I got excited about wearing gumboots down the isle, and had a back up plan.”
