Getting to know… Retro in the Rough

Loved our recent vendor shoot at Brisbane Racing Club?  Well the styling was by none other than Retro in the Rough who are a fabulous props & styling business exhibiting at this weekends Vintage & Handmade Wedding Fair.  We are really excited as they were super keen to not only deck out their own vendor space but to also create a little styled area in conjunction with a few of our other vendors to give further inspiration to our guests.  They will be exhibiting upstairs, but don’t forget to head downstairs and check out their styled area which I believe will be a ceremony set up.

Can you tell us a bit about Retro in the Rough?

Our passion is to bring a little retro to the everyday. To borrow, or to buy, retro in the rough offers an eclectic range of furniture, homewares, collectables and little retro oddities catering for all budgets. Whether it’s “that big special day”, your creative work day, or just a stock standard day, we have a handpicked selection of pieces, that are bound to enliven your home, event, or photo shoot. As an interior designer I love nothing more than to throw around some ideas with loved up couples on how we can help create a unique, hand crafted feel for their special day, that’s is anything but ordinary.

Where are you based and what areas do you service?

We are based on the Gold Coast and we cover all areas from Northern Rivers Region to the beautiful Sunshine Coast. We also travel out to western regional areas as far as Toowoomba.

Can you give us a run down on how to hire the goodies that you have and what options couples have with you?

All pieces within our handpicked collection can be viewed on our website which we update regularly as our hoard continually grows.

We Offer:
1. DIY wedding Hire – For the smaller items couples are welcome to collect and drop-off the items.
2. Delivery and Set Up – For the large items we provide a delivery service to your event location, which at your request can include a full set-up service for an additional fee.
3. Hunting and Sales – With an imaginative, retro-obsessed interior designer steering the way, we also offer restored pieces for sale, as well as acquisition services including hunting down those big-ticket items you’ve always wanted.

How early should couples book your items?

To make sure that their favourite pieces are available for their wedding day, we suggest that couples book with us as soon as possible. Selecting the right pieces can sometimes be challenging, which is why we are happy to provide creative suggestions to help alleviate some of the stress.

Do you have a favourite vintage piece and what is the story behind it?

Oh dear….my favourite changes all the time! Each one of our pieces is unique, and each scratch and dig has a little secret story to tell. But my favourite of the moment is probably my bentwood rocking chair.

What do you think are the upcoming trends for 2013/2014 weddings?

I think there is a definite movement towards couples wanting a more personal, bespoke feeling for their wedding day. Rather than the cookie-cutter must-haves of weddings past, couples are now opting for a look that really reflects their own individual personalities and style. DIY weddings are definitely becoming more popular, with budget conscious couples opting to organize, source and design their own events. And this is where we come in, making it simple for couples to create gorgeous events.

We are firm believers in reducing our footprint on the earth, and retro in the rough is part of the growing trend for more eco friendly celebrations. 95% of our pieces are second-hand or salvaged so by hiring or purchasing from us, you are doing a little bit for the environment too!

What advice do you have for couples when they are thinking about their styling?

Keep it simple – Don’t over complicate things, by over styling. Focus on a few selected elements, and let a few special details carry through the design so that the look feels complete.
Its All About You – Add touches of your own personality and style, because remember…. This day is all about you!
Have fun with it – Don’t let things get too serious. It’s supposed to be fun!

What can couples expect when they visit your stand in August?

The Retro in the Rough stand will have a selection of our favourite items on display. And we invite everyone to come and have a perch on our lounge and have a chat about how we can help add a little retro to their event. We will also have a styled ceremony setting all laid out on the ground floor which is a little collaboration project with a few other vendors.

Are you running any specials on the day?

Retro in the rough is very proudly part of the Vintage and Handmade Competition, with the lucky winner taking home a $500 borrow voucher to be used for their special event.
