Who doesn’t love cake??? I know I do!! I actually love to bake, now I’m no real talent in the kitchen but I certainly do enjoy it. Just a shame I never have any time these days to get into it! So of course with such a love for baking I get super excited checking out all of the professional cake decorators’ work. This is actually one of the things I look forward to most at our fairs. One of the talented wedding cake vendors that will be exhibiting at the Vintage & Handmade Wedding Fair is Love in a Cake and we got to know a little more about them recently.
Can you tell us a bit about Feather & Lace Creative Cakes?
Feather & Lace Creative Cakes was born from a passion of sweets, the quest for good cake and my love of visual arts. My style is vintage-inspired and rustic but I borrow elements from the Victorian era like laces to also being inspired by Australian flora by using fresh floral displays. Quality of product is of utmost importance to me so I source great products and ingredients- free range eggs to organic fair trade chocolate and always 70% cocoa!
Where are you based and what areas do you service?
I am based in Alstonville, a small town near Byron Bay. I service the whole Northern Rivers area to the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
What kind of flavours do you offer?
Lots!! Of course the popular mudcake flavours of dark, milk, mocha, white choc and caramel. Moist Lemon Sour Cream, Red Velvet, Carrot, Banana Toffee, Traditional Fruit and I can cater to requests.
There are also many fillings to choose from too such as chocolate ganache, lemon curd, hazelnut praline mousse, Swiss meringue buttercream which may be laced with passionfruit, raspberry, blueberry or anything in between.
I also cater for special dietary requirements such as gluten free, dairy free, egg free and vegan.
Do you have a favourite flavour or cake style?
I love a moist carrot cake with cream cheese frosting! Personally my style is simple and I prefer a rustic looking cake finished with buttercream and adorned with roses, berries and figs or Australian native flowers.
How early should couples book in for your delicious cakes?
It is best to book 6-8 months in advance so your date is available and secured and gives us plenty of time for design development.
What do you think are the upcoming trends for 2013/2014 weddings?
Vintage, rustic and handmade weddings are still very popular and I think will continue. In terms of cake design lace is big, fresh blooms or sugar flowers on a simple white iced cake, ‘naked’ cakes are being seen more frequently too. I would like to see the design-envelope being pushed like ‘painted’ cakes, ‘embroidered’ cakes, and geometric designs. Personally I feel It’s great to gather inspiration and then see how you can inject your personality and style into it because your guests want to see the ‘you’ in your wedding.
What advice do you have for couples when they are thinking about their cake / sweet treats?
It is good to think about how many guests will be having cake and whether you would like the cake served as dessert or in coffee portions as this can change the size of the cake. Think about how many tiers you would like to have and if you would like to keep a tier for your first wedding anniversary. Would you prefer cupcakes or a dessert buffet? Of course flavour is important, you have to like it! Also look at the design elements of your wedding in terms of colour, styling, invitations, even your wedding dress-these can all be used to inspire design for your cake so it ties in with your wedding theme. Also think about your cake budget, the more spectacular the design the more spectacular the price!
What is your favourite wedding story?
I am more of visual person and relate well to a story as pictures. I have found some beautiful wedding blogs with gorgeous photos of couples utterly in love and having a grand time! But what strikes me the most is when you can see the couple in every detail of their wedding. The whole scene just melds together seamlessly and you know what you are seeing is the true essence of the bride and groom. My favourite wedding picture story so far is the ever popular Bleubird Vintage wedding. Swoon! But to be honest, any wedding story makes my romantic heart go mushy.
What do you love most about creating cakes?
I love that there is a cycle and the steps in that cycle. First there is an idea, then a drawing, colour scribbles, then the cake is baked, filled, iced and decorated, and the design may evolve along the way. Finally it is cut, served, eaten and enjoyed. And so the cycle begins again. I love that cakes are an important part of many celebrations and the tradition they hold.
What can couples expect when they visit your stand in a few weeks?
Yummy tastings, an array of my cake designs on display, a friendly face and an enthusiastic person just wanting to talk cake with you!
Are you running any specials on the day?
