Fresh flowers are absolutely gorgeous, but they are not always everyone’s thing when it comes to bouquets for your wedding day. Whether it’s your budget, theme or even the keepsake factor, many brides are getting really creative with the pieces they carry down the aisle today. One of these floral alternatives is hand crafted felt bouquets that can be custom made in a variety of flower designs and also colour options. We recently caught up with Jackie from Dream a Little who will be showcasing her gorgeous range of felt bouquets and accessories at the Vintage and Handmade Wedding Fair in a few weeks.
Can you tell us a bit about Dream a Little?
“Dream a Little” started while sitting in the hospital with my eight year old middle boy Samuel who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, bone cancer, hours, days and weeks at a time in the hospital….after too many books and movies, one week I brought some craft with me, well one thing lead to another and next thing I was making flower brooches for all the wonderful people who were helping us in this hard time. I loved doing this so much I wanted a challenge, and a bridal bouquet was the perfect thing. I have worked in the wedding industry for 20 years, crafted for more and have enjoyed my garden at home for the last ten years, so they all just combined and “dream a little” was created!
Can you describe your style for us?
I personally love using pure wool hand dyed felt, I love country pastels, butterflies and having fun. With using felt, buttons, brooches, beads and other materials my creations can be anything you imagine!
Where are you based and what areas do you service?
I live in one of the most beautiful areas in Australia, Tamborine Mountain. A destination for many brides and grooms with fantastic wedding reception locations, photo opportunities, and everything you need for your wedding in one place. I will also deliver to the Gold coast and Brisbane areas and post to other areas.
What type of bouquets do you offer?
My bouquets are made from felt, I love using 100% wool felt, hand dyed in so many beautiful colours, but I can also order commercial dyed pure wool felt for a more striking colour. My bouquets range from simple hand cut flowers with simple buttons, flowers with only beads and brooches, flowers with only buttons and elaborate stitching or the lot – stitching, beads, brooches and buttons.
Why a bouquet made out of felt?
The perfect keepsake, other than being beautiful and uniquely your own, they are perfect for people with allergies, or wanting to travel and get married in another location, or for those who get married twice and want the same bouquet.
What advice do you have for couples choosing their flowers / bouquets?
Think with your heart, my bouquets are keepsakes, bring a little bit of yourself into your bouquet, not just your favourite colour. I can add old brooches from family members, your favourite gems or beads, that piece of material that you just love, vintage buttons you have and just love looking at, I can theme it to your favourite ANYTHING!
How early should couples book with you?
I would allow at least a month, just to make time for ordering any special bits and pieces. More time for larger orders.
What is your favourite flower?
I love daisies, they are so sweet and simple, but then I love sunflowers as well for their bold colours and happy smiles.
What is your favourite wedding story?
My own, but my favourite bouquet that I have done so far is my Ocean dreaming bouquet, it is for my little boy Samuel, who dreamt of the ocean with all the beautiful blue/green colours, the wonders of the deep, with fish and starfish and so many jewels and pieces of gold, the treasure buried at the bottom of the ocean.
What do you love most about creating your bouquets?
What I love best about creating my bouquets is that while sitting, cutting or sewing I am dreaming of my next creations, and I love making people happy, it makes me happy.
What do you think are the upcoming trends for 2013/2014 weddings?
I would love to see some more colour!!! More colour in the brides dress.
What can couples expect when they visit your stand in August?
Something a little different, I don’t just make bouquets, I also create buttonholes, garlands, bunting, hairclips, flower girl wands, brooches and corsage’s.
Are you running any specials on the day?
I am offering a free buttonhole with any bridal bouquet, come see me on the day for more details.
