Can you tell us a bit about Betty May Vintage?

We love mismatched craziness. A deliciously offbeat wedding. Celebrations that dare to mix up eras and styles to tell their story.

We’re curators of one of kind vintage pieces for life’s favourite moments – big and small, near and far.

We eschew trends and the idea that vintage is one of them. It’s not. It’s an enduring style that brings a whole lotta heart and evokes unforgettable excitement for the senses.

And Betty May Vintage Hire is our contribution to living a sustainable life by encouraging people to value old things. Let’s hire and recycle – not add to landfill.

We’re here for the originals, inventive and light-hearted, and we’re big believers that you find your style, you find your voice.

So use your voice. Tell your story. Take freedom and do your celebration your way.

Do you have a favourite piece among your collection that you just adore?

When planning my own wedding, I was really frustrated by the cookie cutter glassware for hire. I wanted something timeless, but unexpected. So it’s been a focus to build a stunning collection of vintage champagne saucers, crystal wine glasses and tumblers. Because some toasts are meant to be enjoyed the old fashioned way.

What inspires you when it comes to selecting your pieces?

We have a bowerbird approach that values authenticity and beauty, never imitation.

When selecting pieces, we consider the style, colour and shape; the rest of our collection; and importantly, how the old pieces will work combined with the new.

How early should couples book in for your hire services?

Many of our brides book with us at least 6 months before their big day, just to make sure they won’t miss out on something that they love. But with our extensive vintage collection for hire, we’re able to help brides anytime before their wedding day.

What advice do you have for brides when they are working out their wedding design style when it comes to props and styling?

  • Trust your instinct and stick to the things you love.
  • You get to define your type of vintage. Take it as little or as far as you want to go.
  • Don’t be afraid to mix styles from different eras.
  • Get creative with vessels for your flowers. We love to upcycle old pieces and use them as vases like old decanters & medicine bottles and cut glass dishes & compotes.
  • Try to remember props and styling for the cake table, dessert table, grazing table and gift table, as well as wine barrels and dry bars. People tend to focus on the tabletops and forget these areas.

What do you love most about hiring for weddings?

Getting to meet beautiful people who share our values. Our brides are relaxed and carefree. But they’re also misfits, rebels. They don’t care for the rules – they do their wedding their way. Which means we get to see our collection used in beautiful and different ways.

When you’re not working, what do you love to spend your time doing?

Between events and hunting for vintage treasures, I like to spend my time with my daughter, Arabella, and husband, Ben. Travelling, music and cooking are high on the priority list – when there’s time to enjoy them!

For 2016/2017 what sort of trends do you think there will be with wedding styling?

  • People want stuff around them to tell their story. We’ll see more focus on personal touches.
  • Blending the old with the new for that coveted modern vintage look.
  • Palette of white and timber with lots of greenery. It’s classic and timeless.
  • Mismatched dinner plates paired with contemporary gold or rose gold flatware.
  • Unique glassware to bring the dazzle to tabletops.
  • Picnic hampers filled with delicious shared eats and blankets strewn on the lawn to entertain guests between the ceremony and dinner. It allows guests to casually mingle in a relaxed, outdoor setting.
