Alice & Ryan’s Vintage Inspired Fremantle Wedding

Alice & Ryan’s wedding day was based around ‘family’ and ‘us’. Every aspect of their day was inspired or touched by their family or things they like. They wanted a really relaxed and simple day with no pressure on anyone so they made the decision to not have bridesmaids or groomsmen. The couple did all the decorations themselves apart from the flowers to really create a lovely personal touch for the day. “We wanted the day to reflect us so we made choices in line with that.  We never liked the thought of a sit down formal night so we went for cocktail style so everyone could choose where to sit or what to do and it was not so structured.”

“We were engaged for just under one year before the wedding, however initially we weren’t planning to getting married for a few years as we had just purchased a second property. Ryan came across Moore & Moore Cafe on the internet so we went for breakfast and fell in love with the relaxed, vintage feel which suited us perfectly. It felt like our home filled with vintage pieces. We enquired for a date and then everything else fell into place after that.”

The couple chose Peggy Saas Photography to capture their wedding images.  “I had seen some of Peggy’s editorial work online and fell in love with one of her shoots. I didn’t know who took the photos at the time I just loved them. A few weeks later I went to the Vintage Bride Wedding Fair in Perth and was so excited when I saw a stall with the same photos! When I met Peggy it sealed the deal! I couldn’t wait to get home and tell Ryan.”

Blossom and Bloom are two of the nicest, warmest ladies you will meet. They made choosing flowers so easy and created a beautiful flower crown for me for the reception as well.”

For Alice’s dress, she went for a relaxed bohemian style dress from Grace Loves Lace.  “They were a dream to work with, and I felt so comfortable in my dress which was really important to me. I could never wear a traditional corseted dress and still enjoy myself. I actually only tried one dress at a traditional bridal shop and then decided it was not me. I had always loved Grace Loves Lace so I talked to their stylist and she pointed me in the direction of something that would suit me.”

“We both agree our favourite part of the day was saying our vows. It was really raw and emotional for us both. We are so glad we wrote our own vows, it was amazing!”

“I didn’t want a wedding band as I felt it would overwhelm my beautiful art deco engagement ring. Ryan found an art deco watch only 5 years older in Busselton on our honeymoon which he bought for my ‘wedding band’.”

“Before we started to take couple portraits around Fremantle, we went to a local pub and had a Kilkenny for my grandad who had passed away. He loved a good Kilkenny and it was fun making milky moustaches.”

“Peggy Saas is an amazing photographer with her awesome sidekick Lifa. Absolutely wonderful experience, loved catching up before the wedding for coffees and chats about what we were planning. We love spontaneous and unposed photos and the ladies really understood us, it was so relaxed and fun!”

“We also chose not to have a cake because we don’t really like cake and didn’t want to spend money on something we would not enjoy. This is why we had a small lemon meringue pie made by Alice’s granma and we cut this between the parents and grandparents and us. The cocktail style reception was great for us as it was so relaxed.”

“We used vintage ladders for people to hang polaroids of themselves on (this was a massive hit). Alice’s granma made our cutting pie which is her family famous recipe, she also crocheted a bunting for our wishing suitcase which was the suitcase that Alice’s Dad and family brought over from England in 1965. She also knitted a special blanket for us to sit on at the beach to take photos on. We had a photo display where we displayed two vintage ladders we had tied twine on them and we provided a polaroid camera with a note encouraging everyone to take a photo of themselves to hang up. We now have those ladders displayed in our house and they’re such a talking point.”

“We made our own guest book which had photos of our last 10 years together with ‘guess the year and give us a caption’.”

Alice’s advice:

“We are glad we didn’t spend money on things that weren’t us. Throughout the planning sometimes we were lead astray with thoughts of ‘would people not like this’ or what others expectations might be but when we grounded ourselves to what we like it worked out perfect.”

“Having only five months to organise the wedding really worked for us as well. It ensured we made all the decisions promptly and as a team which was good for me as I am quite fickle.”
