Seersucker Wedding Dresses

This is a trend that I’m absolutely loving – the seersucker wedding dress.  Of course it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea (but what is really??) but for brides who are after something really unique, comfortable and also eco-conscious the seersucker gown is a lovely concept to consider.

So what is seersucker? It’s a lightweight cotton that is often found with a pastel coloured stripe or chequered design and has distinct puckering over the fabric to give it texture.  It’s generally considered to be a bit of an all-purpose fabric, but when you sew it up in a glamorous ball gown it can look absolutely breathtaking.

As it’s a cotton fabric, this style of gown is so lovely when lined in a cotton fabric as well, giving an all natural fibre wedding dress at a price tag lower than silk fabric.  Seersucker is also a lovely breathable fabric for brides marrying in warmer weather (although when you add all of the interlining and boning it doesn’t matter what your dress is made of, you will sweat!)

To add a touch of glam to this fabric, it looks really stunning with a silk organza over the top and of course as a bridal dress a layer of white or ivory silk organza is the perfect addition to give the classic bridal look but with a twist.  A fabulous example of this is the custom seersucker wedding dress created by Silver Sixpence for our recent fashion shoot for Vintage Bride magazine Issue 1.

Vintage Inspired Toowoomba Wedding at Preston Chapel and Manor

While we are busy putting together our lovely upcoming Vintage Bride Wedding Fair in Toowoomba I though it would be lovely to showcase a gorgeous vintage inspired wedding from Preston Chapel & Manor in Toowoomba which was photographed by Lizzy C Photography.

Lizzy travelled from Melbourne up to Toowoomba for Fiona and Dylan’s Wedding.  She recalls,  “I might be a little biased because I know the couple personally, but what an amazing day! Really, it was the most carefully thought-out, fun and beautifully romantic wedding. It was very special for my husband, Dave, and me, since we both got to play our little parts; me as photographer and Dave as a bridesmaid!”

“The girls (and Dave) prepared for the day at Vacy Hall, a beautiful historic mansion in downtown Toowoomba, and were driven to the Preston Village Chapel in style in a pristine 1936 Dodge limousine. Fiona looked stunning as she stepped through the doors of the chapel. As she walked down the aisle, Dylan couldn’t help but shed a few tears at the sight of her. (Dylan, I hope you don’t mind me sharing this with the world but it was truly lovely!)”

“If you feel as though you are seeing double when looking at these photos, don’t despair; you kind of are. Fiona’s lovely twin sister Christina was maid of honour, and was responsible for many of the beautiful crafty details. You can see some of Christina’s amazing work on her blog. Fiona is an active blogger herself; you can check out her award-winning blog here.”

“The party kicked on at the adjoining Preston Manor as the sun set over the valley. The guests laughed and cried with the happy couple during the speeches, and giggled uncontrollably while playing dress-up in the photo booth.”

Ways to Use Hay Bales in your Vintage Wedding

Backyard and country weddings are such a popular choice for the vintage loving couple.  Venues that offer sprawling grounds that allow the ability to really get creative with props and styling are what these couples are looking for and once you’ve got the ultimate location booked it’s time to get clever with creating a fabulous rustic looking wedding ceremony and reception.

Hay bales are a really great way to add to the country or rustic styling of a sprawling outdoor wedding event and are often fairly easy to come by (if you’re in a major capital city, as they are so popular I bet if you contact your favourite wedding stylist they’ll have a contact to make it happen for you, and of course for country brides it will be super easy to find a local who sells hay bales and better yet if you can get delivery included so you don’t need to worry about lugging them around).

If you’re thinking that hay bales could be a cool inclusion in your rustic chic wedding day here are some lovely inspiration images to help you out with ways to use hay bales in your vintage wedding:

Autumn Love

I was fortunate enough to have the privileged of making Sam from The Wanderers and the Wolves’ wedding dress and since then I’ve been watching her photography business grow from strength to strength.  There is something so magical about the moments that she captures between couples and this gorgeous styled shoot that we shot with her for the very first issue of The Vintage and Handmade Bride magazine is no exception (it even scored the highly sought after cover image!).  The bride and groom in this shoot were a real life couple, and along with a team of truly fabulous vendors we created such a beautiful autumn harvest inspired shoot.

Vintage inspired wedding gloves

There is something so glorious about a bride donning a pair of gloves on her wedding day in my opinion.  I’m not talking the crazy fingerless gloves that scream 80s, I mean the timeless short little gloves teamed up with a sweet little 50s dress or a classic long pair of gloves worn with a dramatic 30s inspired gown.

Gloves aren’t every brides thing, but for those who love to either be quite authentic (remember it wasn’t really all that long ago in our past that it was scandalous for a lady to be out without her hat and gloves!) or just like a bit of fun there are quite a few styles to go for.

Short little gloves can look fabulous in delicate lace, or even hand crocheted.  They could be a sleek satin or even trimmed with a cute little bow.  When it comes to longer gloves, in my opinion a plain satin is the way to go.  I’m yet to see a pair of long lace or mesh gloves that I honestly love.

Do keep in mind the logistics of wearing gloves though.  For ease I would recommend not wearing gloves during the ceremony, so with this in mind there are two options.  Firstly you could remove your gloves before walking down the aisle and pop them back on for photos later, or you could remove them when it is time to pass your bouquet to your bridesmaid and hand both your bouquet and gloves to her.  If you choose to do it that way be sure to practice removing your gloves a few times as some can be quite tricky to remove and with all eyes on an excited you, your fingers can get quite fumbly!
